Let’s go back about 40 years ago on the Mar Menor in Murcia region, which was at the time an isolated community of farmers and miners. You can imagine the incredulity when an American called Gregory Peters breezed in with the idea to build a golf resort which would be three times the size of Monaco.
This new idea was exciting, exotic and completely new for Spain. Peter chose this site for its Palm Springs style and decided the resort would be built in the valleys and hillsides overlooking the sandy, long peninsula known as La Manga. At the time this area that separates the gorgeous Mar Menor lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea was called the Strip.
A stunning growth
Within 10 years, the La Manga Club area has been turned into a trendy place welcoming sports stars and celebrities. Bjorn Borg and Gary Player have bought homes on the five star resort, as well as the king Felipe who is a regular visitor.
La Manga Club has built bigger and better facilities to welcome a larger amount of visitor and develop its prestigious reputation. The eight football pitches are attracting Premier League Teams who are piling in for pre-season training. David Beckham and the England squad trained here before the 1998 World Cup.
This Summer has seen a number of top tier teams appearing at the resort among which FC Barcelona who hosted the kids’ football camp.
In more recent years, the resort has started a makeover to stay ahead of the growing competition on other Spanish coasts and the Algarve.
La Manga Club’s Modern Era
La Manga Club needs to keep up with today’s buyers who are looking for something different. Modern architecture has become the trend on the coastal homes market and the resort has found the way to adapt to the demand with the launch of Las Acacias and Las Buganvillas, offering plots and custom villas.
In the future, there will be a number of new developments taking place across the resort, one of them being described as the “Mayfair of La Manga“. It will be composed of modern villas, a new golf course, hotel, retail and homes. An ultra luxurious new community within the bigger resort
Even though La Manga Club has a fair amount of older houses at the moment, this won’t be for much longer. It was seen as ground breaking 40 years ago and the renowned architects are currently at work to keep surprising the owners of this unique resort.
